HOW TO DEHYDRATE FOODS, DEHYDRATED RECIPES PLUS HERBS
CHIVES
Foods
that I use chives in cooking are: soups, stews, potato salad, coleslaw, and tomato sauce dishes.
It grows in
zone 3-9. It needs full sun.
We have grown chives from seeds but the best way is to grow the seedlings.
Grow them 5-8 inches apart. Chives grows like a weed, If you want to divide older clumps do it in the early spring.
Chives grows 6-12 inches high and it is a perennial. We have pink flowers and they are wonderful in the spring.
I use chives all year. We grow it outside and it comes back the next year. In the fall I bring it in the house and
it is very easy to grow indoors> It has to be near a sunny window. If you do not have onions, you can use chives in your
dishes. Some of the recipes in
this handbook are:
Creamed Corn, Corn Fritters, Winter Corn Pudding, Green Bean Casserole, Vegetable Soup, Beef
Vegetable, Apple Pie and much more.
There is also a table that tells you how to refresh dried food. You can use
these directions for your home made dried food from you garden or with long term dried food.
There is also directions
to grow, harvest and preserve 5 different kinds of herbs. These are some of the herbs we grow at Mary's Homestead.
They are as follows: basil, chives, dill, the mint family, and parsley.
